Peru Overview

Iquitos is Peru’s major port on the upper Amazon. Ships travel up the Amazon some 2300 miles to reach this destination. It is the capital of of Peru’s Mayans Province. It is the largest metropolis in the Peruvian Amazon east of the Andes. The population exceeds 420,000.

Iquitos is the largest city in the world that can only be reached by air and water. The region exports lumbar, oil, fish, minerals and agriculture.

The depth of healthcare available in Iquitos is directly related to socioeconomic status, gender, and education. Both public and private care exist. This outreach focuses efforts on the men, women and children living in poverty, dependent on the public assistance for their healthcare needs. The Mayor of Iquitos recognizes the needs of her people and has graciously invited us to serve. She fully supports our endeavor.

The Amazon Basin is a world of mystery and grandeur. The rainforest and rushing waters are home to 4000 species of birds, 2000 species of fish and 60 species of reptiles. It truly is a region of natural wonder and beauty.
